Never store whole garlic bulbs in the fridge – follow this expert method instead

Garlic is a versatile ingredient to have on hand as it plays a crucial role in many savory dishes, from roast potatoes to tikka masala.

Proper storage is crucial for garlic to stay fresh for up to six months. This means keeping it in the right place and at the right temperature.

Vlatka Lake, a storage expert from the space station, told Express.co.uk her top recommendations for storing garlic effectively, depending on its form.

As a rule of thumb, experts advise against storing whole garlic bulbs in the refrigerator, and for a specific reason.

Storage of whole garlic

To preserve freshness, leave garlic bulbs whole and in their papery skins. Breaking them apart will cause them to dry out more quickly and shorten their shelf life.

Store whole, unpeeled garlic in a cool, dry place with good air circulation, such as a pantry or cupboard.

Avoid refrigeration as the cold can cause sprouting and bitterness. Use a basket or bowl for storage rather than plastic bags, which tend to collect moisture.

Storage of peeled and chopped garlic

If you’ve peeled or minced garlic, refrigeration is the best option. Wrap peeled cloves in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container.

Minced garlic should be stored in a small airtight jar or sealed bag and used within three days, as it may discolor if it goes bad.

Freezing garlic

For longer-term storage, garlic can be frozen for up to 12 months.

To freeze whole cloves, peel them, spread them out on a baking sheet until frozen solid, then place them in a sealable bag.

Chopped garlic can be frozen with a little water in ice cube trays and can then be easily added directly to dishes when needed.
