Netflix has reportedly just canceled another great show after Season 1

Netflix has had quite a bit of success lately with high-quality film and series offerings and hasn’t dropped as many good series as usual. Now they may have broken that streak when a cast member said they were canceling Jeff Goldblum’s Kaos after just one season. No season 2 for Kaos.

While this isn’t directly from Netflix, it’s from actress Aurora Perrineau, who played Riddy in the series. Here’s what she said in a now-deleted Instagram post:

“Well… this hurts… I find it really difficult to explain how I feel, but I’ll try… For the first time in my life, I felt truly proud. I’m obviously proud of everyone’s work and the care they put into this project because I can tell you, they left everything on the floor. But I was also proud of myself, and that’s something I struggled with.” She later said outright that it was canceled.

Kaos performed reasonably well in the top 10 charts for a while, but never made it to No. 1, and its viewership lagged behind a number of other series that were renewed. According to What’s On Netflix, the series performed worse in its first four weeks than Obliterated and The Brothers Sun, two other series that were canceled. It’s about half of Supacell, a series that had very high scores and presumably a lower budget and was renewed.

Kaos was a unique twist on Greek mythology: Jeff Goldblum as Zeus and Janet McTeer as Hera. It received solid reviews, 76% from critics and even 83% from fans, many of whom are now dismayed by the reported cancellation.

As always, this is probably a combination of cost and viewership, where it performed decently but not well enough. We don’t know how much it cost, but there was at least one major star in Goldblum. It hung around for over a month before apparently being canceled, and there is some evidence that Netflix may have tried to list it as a limited series, some data shows. However, it is not currently listed as such on the service. The creator originally said he wanted the series to run for three seasons.

One piece of data we don’t know is the all-important completion rate, as this is a key indicator of Season 2 renewal regardless of whether viewers sit through the entire series or not. If they fade quickly, that suggests many wouldn’t return for the second season. If not, they might come back for more. We don’t know if that happened here.

But as with all of these cancellations, the series had its fans and many wanted to see more of the characters. But that doesn’t seem to be happening. I’ve reached out to Netflix for comment and will update if I hear back.
