Remember those Independence Day celebrations that Mother Nature postponed? The event, dubbed the “Best Makeup Party Ever” by the city, was rescheduled for Thursday, August 22, at Round Lake Park, offering an evening of music, food and fireworks.

The evening began with a lively performance by the Free & Easy Band, which put everyone in a festive mood.

As the sun set, Round Lake provided a stunning backdrop that perfectly complemented the sounds and excitement in the air. It was truly a family-oriented event, with the kids seemingly enjoying everything the most. Their smiles were infectious as they ran around, laughed, and played. As the fireworks lit up the sky, the crowd, especially the kids, responded with delighted “oohs” and “ahs” at each explosion of color.

However, there was a moment of unexpected excitement when some fireworks went off course. Although one or more fireworks were accidentally shot into the crowd on the west side of the lake, Eden Prairie officials assured everyone that no one was hurt and the city is taking steps to prevent this from happening again.

A favorite photo spot returned: the larger-than-life “I (heart) EP” sign. Families and friends lined up to capture memories with this iconic symbol and proudly display their love for Eden Prairie. An unexpected attraction was a plane flying overhead carrying a banner that read “Elect Wendi Russo for State Representative,” which caught everyone’s attention and added a touch of local politics to the evening.

Food trucks and vendors

The event featured numerous food trucks and vendors, each offering unique and delicious options:

  • Concessions for deep roots: A returning favorite, they served root beer floats along with gluten-free and vegan options, pleasing those with dietary restrictions and anyone craving a sweet, nostalgic treat.
  • Dough Gold: A hit with cookie lovers, this truck offers freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and edible cookie dough, perfect for anyone craving a delicious dessert.
  • Drew’s concessions: I couldn’t resist their hot, fluffy mini donuts which were a warm and sweet treat. They were a popular choice among visitors looking for a quick, sweet meal.
  • Eden Prairie Lions Club: Always a reliable source of information at community events, the Lions Club serves a selection of classic refreshments including beer, water and wine – perfect for those looking to relax.
  • Maui Wow: They brought a touch of the tropics with refreshing smoothies and other island-inspired treats and gave the evening a cheerful holiday mood.
  • Pizza a las Brasas: Their wood-fired pizzas were delicious, with crispy crust and rich toppings. However, the 45 minute wait was a bit long. A notice of the wait time would have been appreciated, especially for families with young children.
  • Pretty great cheesecake: This truck attracted attention with unique cheesecake flavors like the S’more and Mini Donut. These unconventional options offered a fun twist on a classic dessert and many visitors enjoyed trying something different.
  • TacoWay: Taco Way serves a selection of delicious and filling tacos, offering a hearty alternative for those craving something more substantial.
  • A real treat: An ice cream truck offering classic flavors like vanilla and chocolate as well as more creative options like cotton candy and caramel swirl, the perfect quick way to cool down on a warm evening.

Final thoughts

Overall, this Second Chance at Round Lake Park was a wonderful way to end the summer season. With delicious food, great music, and spectacular fireworks (despite one minor incident), it was a perfect evening for families and friends to come together, celebrate, and enjoy all the community has to offer.
