Mother of three has to stay in a hotel with her two children because it is cheaper than renting locally

A single mother and her three children are temporarily living in a hotel after being evicted from their rental apartment after six years and unable to afford local prices.

Suzanne Hayes had just 30 days to find a new home before March 1 after the house she and her children lived in was sold.

“Where were we going to go? How was I going to afford it? I had no savings to fall back on; hell, I didn’t even have a credit card,” she wrote for Business Insider.

The mother began looking for new properties on Zillow, but the options were beyond her financial reach.

A two-bedroom apartment cost $2,700, a three-bedroom apartment cost $3,000, she said. And all the apartments she found were rejected because of her “sub-par” credit score.

“I was devastated. My plate wasn’t just full. It was shattering and leaving a mess all around me,” she wrote.

Her mother offered them a place to stay, but at 46, Hayes wanted her own privacy and independence, so she stumbled upon extended stays in a hotel.

Best of all, the pool house rental includes all of the hotel’s amenities, including a pool, gym, sauna, restaurant, continental breakfast, and weekly housekeeping.

“Their eyes lit up when I showed them the pool, game room, sauna and gym,” she wrote. “Sure, it was only a temporary solution – the apartment was on the small side and the location wasn’t perfect. But it was a place my kids and I could call our own, if only for a few months.”

“This is not an apartment I would have ever looked for, and it would never have occurred to me to consider a hotel for my housing needs. On paper, it is not the best choice for me and my children. But the amenities are the answer to my prayers.”

It is unclear how long the family plans to stay there and where they will go next.
