Morning Briefing: Mets’ final week disrupted

Good morning, Mets fans!

The Mets should Chris Sales and the Atlanta Braves in Game 2 of a crucial three-game set to decide the fate of both clubs’ postseason hopes on Wednesday night. However, with Hurricane Helene raging across the Southeast, Games 2 and 3 of the series have been postponed to a Monday doubleheader if need be. While many unfortunate factors prevented this series from being completed, it could help the Mets overall.

With the Mets now missing two games, they could secure a postseason berth without playing another game against the Braves. If the Mets, who are currently tied with the Diamondbacks for the second wild card spot, are one game ahead of Arizona after Sunday, they will have secured a postseason berth. The doubleheader may still have to be played if the Braves are still in the race for the final spot, but if the Mets have a one-game lead over Arizona, that would take all the pressure off the Amazin’s before that Monday game.

Wildcard Update

Because of Hurricane Helene, neither the Mets nor the Braves played on Wednesday. However, the Diamondbacks beat the Giants 8-2 to move into a tie with the Mets for the second wild card spot and a full game ahead of the Braves for the third and final wild card spot.

The Padres, meanwhile, lost 4-3 to the Dodgers. They have a 3.5-game lead over the Mets and are three games behind the Dodgers in the race for the NL West.

With the Dodgers’ win last night and the Phillies’ first-round bye, the Mets’ next opponent, Milwaukee, is now officially locked into third place and has nothing to lose for the rest of the season in terms of seeding and a possible bye.
