Efforts to beautify the area around the local subway station have resulted in a new mural and a soon-to-open community garden.

Riders on the A Metro Line may have noticed the mural next to the tracks and on the Alexan Marmont Building (1625 S. Magnolia Ave.).

“The mural captures the features and characteristics of our foothill jewel, including some fun Monrovian legends – like Samson in the whirlpool!” wrote City Manager Dylan Feik in his online newsletter.

Alexan Marmont developers Trammel Crow Residential funded the mural entirely through Monrovia’s Art in Public Places program, which requires multifamily housing projects over $1 million to set aside 1% of the total cost to fund artwork near the project site.

In addition to the mural, the city this year opened the Station Square Farmers Market at 1629 S. Myrtle Avenue. The market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers a wide variety of fresh local produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods. The city and Metro offer 200 free parking spaces on the 2nd and 3rd floors at Station Square on Saturdays, Feik said.

Directly across from the new mural is Monrovia Community Garden South, a new community space located between Station Square Park and the MODA residential building.

Monrovia’s first community garden at 303 W. Colorado Blvd. led to the creation of a second location in the Station Square area, Feik said.

The grand opening of Community Garden South is scheduled for September 7th at 9am.
