Missing 8-year-old girl found unharmed after driving to destination in mother’s car

An 8-year-old girl is now safe after she ran away from home and drove alone in her mother’s car to a Target store in Ohio to shop, authorities said.

According to a Bedford police incident report later shared with PEOPLE, officers arrived at a Bedford home around 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, after being notified of a missing juvenile and a 2020 Nissan Rogue. Authorities said the girl’s family members had last seen her about two hours earlier.

Footage from a neighbor’s Ring camera shows the girl leaving the house and driving away alone in the SUV, police said.

Bedford police added in their report that officers found the girl at the Target store in Bainbridge, Ohio. Her family members later came to the store to get her and the car.

According to the incident report, the girl also told police that she hit a mailbox during her trip.

In a statement on social media, Bedford police humorously commented on the incident: “I finally found a woman who is in a greater hurry to shop at Target than my wife. In fact, she is in a greater hurry by 8 years.”

“She is now safely home,” the department added. “I’m not sure what she bought or if she was even able to use her Target app to save 5%. We let her finish her Frappuccino. We mean no harm.”

Authorities said no charges were filed against the girl because of her age, adding that they were glad there were no injuries, Fox affiliate WJW reported.

PEOPLE reached out to Target for comment on Monday, September 16, but did not immediately respond.
