Mike Tyson videos offer clues ahead of Jake Paul fight

Mike Tyson’s training videos are back, but what they reveal is uncertain.

Prior to Tyson’s medical emergency on May 26, which led to the fight being postponed, eight short video clips of Tyson workouts were posted to his social media accounts while he was training for his fight against Jake Paul. New video clips were released following Tyson’s return to training in July.

Like the old ones, the new ones also have Iron Mike power and even more power.

“This is not an illusion,” said Teddy Atlas, the boxing analyst, after watching the early videos before Tyson’s medical emergency. “People say, ‘Oh man, he’s going to kill that guy (Paul).’ ”

Atlas is not convinced. Neither of them are chance makers. And that was before Tyson’s health problems. Why? That’s why these Tyson videos don’t show about 60 seconds of combined action.

Atlas and three other trainers reviewed video clips recorded before Tyson experienced the medical emergency that the boxer’s team identified as an “ulcer flare.” And those coaches provided their analysis to USA TODAY Sports.

Is Mike Tyson’s left hook enough against Jake Paul?

Atlas worked with Tyson when the former heavyweight champion was a young teenager under the tutelage of Cus D’Amato. He said he wasn’t surprised that the video clips show spurts of Tyson at his peak.

“Even in its later years when it goes out to pasture, a racehorse will probably still show little canter bursts that a regular horse might not show,” Atlas said.

“But it shouldn’t be misconstrued to think that (Tyson) can absolutely do this with a fighter where you don’t know what’s coming and when it’s coming, like you did when you were in your 20s was.”

Atlas recalled the end of Tyson’s career, which included three defeats in his last four fights: “I don’t know how strong he is at this point.”

He also said Tyson’s once-devastating left hook might not be enough to win the fight.

“The best shot Paul has is a straight right hand,” Atlas said. “A straight right hand will still throw a left hook if the left hook is thrown at the wrong time.

“If (Paul) has enough experience to throw (the right hand), not just straight, but without hesitation… a straight right hand can hit the left hook, and that would be my focus as a coach.”

What could be the deciding factor in the fight? Endurance

Robert Garcia was named Trainer of the Year by The Ring magazine in 2011 and has worked with champions such as heavyweight Anthony Joshua.

From the videos, Garcia said Tyson looked “explosive and impressive.”

“But at (58) years old, eight rounds won’t be easy for him,” he added. “It will be difficult.

“He is dangerous because he is a strong person. But I don’t think it’ll be more than a round or two before he probably won’t be able to do much.”

Garcia says stamina will be key, and that can’t be determined from the videos. Tyson is 30 years older than Paul.

“The good thing is the power will never go out,” Garcia said. “He has the heart, he has the strength. His stamina will probably be the most important thing, especially if he’s able to take a few hits and last two or three rounds.

“Then it might get to a point where, even if Tyson pushed himself as hard as he trained, I don’t think he’ll be able to go all eight rounds in a real fight. Because it’s hard, man.”

Mike Tyson: No longer “frail and just broken”?

Between 1998 and 2006, Ann Wolfe was one of the most evil women in the world. She recorded 16 knockouts, including five in the first round, and won world titles in four weight classes.

Now she’s a trainer who said she sees more than just power in Tyson’s videos.

“You see the focus and determination,” she said, noting that wasn’t the case at the end of Tyson’s professional career. “He was losing and looked so frail and just broken.”

Wolfe also said she sees signs in Tyson’s signing timing that could offset Paul’s youth.

“Sometimes the other person can be faster, but timing is important,” she said. “And Mike Tyson seems to be just as fast.”

And what does Wolfe wonder about the video?

“He’s in shape,” she said. “But I would like to see how his body behaves when he takes a hit.”

What fighters like Mike Tyson lose as they age

As a trainer, Buddy McGirt worked with Antonio Tarver, Arturo Gatti and Laila Ali.

Commenting on Tyson’s video, McGirt said: “He’s very powerful, man. You don’t lose that. The last thing a fighter loses is his punching power.

“He looks fast, he looks strong. “But there’s nothing like the original.”

The real thing – as in a real fight – could reveal something that happens as fighters get older, McGirt suggested.

“You lose your reflexes, your shooting ability,” he said. “They haven’t fired in over 20 years.

“I mean, he’s had a wonderful life for 20 years. So it all adds up. “Here is a young man (Paul) who was busy and active.”
