Mikaela Mayer vs. Sandy Ryan results: Winner, scorecard and reaction

In a fantastic fight, Mikaela Mayer defeated Sandy Ryan by majority decision (95-95, 97-93, 96-94) to win the WBO welterweight championship at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

The fight was laced with tons of bad blood and reached a new level before the event began. Ryan was attacked by an unknown person with red paint, which she said had an effect on her in the ring. Honestly, you couldn’t tell. Ryan was spectacular in defeat. She put a lot of pressure on Mayer, especially in the second half of the fight.

However, Mayer’s length, combinations, uppercuts and length convinced two judges to score the fight in her favor. Both fighters had their moments. Ryan appeared to rock Mayer with a huge left hook in the fourth round. To Mayer’s credit, she never took a step back and wasn’t afraid to engage in exchanges.

Mayer appeared to have injured Ryan at least twice. The last time came in the 10th and final round and it may have made the difference in the fight ending in a majority draw. The conflict between Mayer and Ryan began when the latter came to the United States to train and decided to join the former’s gym.

Mayer had a problem with this because he knew the two would argue at some point. Ryan suggested that this argument led to the paint attack before the fight, but Mayer denied involvement. After the fight, Mayer made it clear that she would prefer to unify the welterweight titles.

However, she said she would face her rival again if fans wanted her to face Ryan again and “if the money is right.”

During her interview with ESPN’s Mark Kriegel, who scored the fight in her favor, Ryan appeared particularly dejected after the fight. Ryan blamed the attack on her lack of concentration and mistakes in the ring and appeared shaken by the fans’ heckling. No matter what anyone says, Ryan and Mayer pulled off a classic and turned women’s boxing even further on its head with their performance.

Former champion Amanda Serrano accepted X and praised Mayer and Ryan during their performance.

Serrano has a high-profile rematch against Katie Taylor on November 15th. This fight is the co-main event before the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson from Arlington, Texas.

A long-time boxing journalist also praised the fight. He also scored the victory for Mayer with 96-94.

If you haven’t seen a full women’s boxing match yet and are interested, consider watching this as your indoctrination into the sport.
