Michigan is humiliated by Texas in a 31-12 loss

play

Michigan football no longer has the longest winning streak in the nation.

And it was not a pretty sight for the loud, yellow and blue fans at Michigan Stadium against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.

The No. 9 Wolverines suffered a complete loss of their 16-game winning streak and their 23-game home winning streak against Texas on Saturday in Ann Arbor, when they crushed the Longhorns 31-12.

Michigan (1-1) last lost to TCU in the national semifinals of the College Football Playoff on December 31, 2022 in the Fiesta Bowl. The team won the national championship last January.

Michigan’s vaunted defense had no answer for quarterback Quinn Ewers (2-0), a Texas native who left Ohio State after his freshman season in 2021, and the tactics of head coach Steve Sarkisian. Ewers speared the Wolverines with 246 passing yards and three touchdowns.

And the Wolverines’ offense was unable to keep up. They scored just one touchdown, a 31-yard catch by Semaj Morgan with just under two minutes left. Senior quarterback Davis Warren, making his second start, threw two interceptions. None of the others attempted a pass; backup QB Alex Orji ran for minus-1 yards twice.

Michigan hosts Arkansas State next Saturday, then USC comes to town on Sept. 21. Texas hosts UTSA next week.

Rainer Sabin is in his sixth season reporting on college football in Michigan, Michigan State and the Big Ten for the Detroit Free Press.
