Megan Thee Stallion was a little unsettled at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.
Shortly after opening the evening as host of the 2024 ceremony, Megan turned heads with a stunning tribute to the legendary Britney Spears and one of her most famous VMA looks.
Megan came out of a commercial break in a nearly identical replica of the ensemble Spears wore when she performed her hit “I’m a Slave 4 U” at the 2001 VMAs – giant yellow python and all. The python, however, made her want to scream and roar.
Visibly freaked out, the “Mamushi” rapper quickly removed the reptile that was wrapped around her body.
“Stop the music! Stop the music,” Megan shouted. “I’m just playing! Come and get that snake!”
“I don’t know this snake! This snake doesn’t know me,” she added as a stagehand helped her remove the snake.
“Oh my God!” she said when she was rid of the python. “I was trying to hold onto it for Britney,” she added before regaining her composure.
The 2024 Video Music Awards was Meg’s first time hosting the show. She was nominated for 7 trophies.
The 29-year-old rapper first took the VMA stage in August 2019, performing her singles “Hot Girl Summer” and “Cash S——t.”
So far, Megan Thee Stallion has won two VMAs: Best Power Anthem for “Hot Girl Summer” in 2019 and Best Hip Hop for “Savage” in 2020.
Although this is her first time hosting an awards show, the “Otaku Hot Girl” rapper served as a musical guest and guest host on “Saturday Night Live” in October 2022. Additionally, she co-hosted “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in August 2022.
During her SNL monologue, she discussed her studio album “Traumatized,” talked about mental health issues in the black and LGBT community, and highlighted her achievements – including graduating from Texas Southern University.
The musician, who will also perform at the VMAs, is nominated for five awards, including Best Collaboration, Best Hip Hop and Best Art Direction.
Last year, the “WAP” singer made headlines for an alleged backstage feud with Justin Timberlake, but she debunked the rumors by posting a TikTok video featuring the duo.
“I just talk with my hands 🤷🏽♀️ lol @justintimberlake,” she captioned the video.
The “Savage” artist has been busy this summer with the new single “Mamushi” from her 2024 album “Megan,” which features Japanese rapper and singer Yuki Chiba.
The song was streamed over 150 million times, building on the success of her diss track “Hiss,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year.
The music video was shot in Tokyo and stars Megan and actor Shô Kasamatsu, known from the television series “Tokyo Vice”.
Earlier this month, she also released “Neva Play,” her collaboration with BTS lead singer RM.
The rapper is currently on her “Hot Girl Summer Tour,” stopping in New York to perform at Madison Square Garden with GloRilla and Cardi B. In July, she also performed at a rally for 2024 presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Atlanta.
