Mediterranean food truck returns under a new name

21 August 2024

Moe Fares has returned to his food truck roots this season.

He founded Kabab King on the streets of Sioux Falls in 2018 and moved to a Mediterranean food restaurant and market on East 10th Street in 2021, but closed it at the end of 2022.

This summer he opened King of Gyros in a bright red trailer that he converted himself.

Fares focuses on the festivals in the area and the late-night crowds that line the bars in downtown Sioux Falls on weekends. That’s where the biggest crowds are, he said.

King of Gyros can often be found Friday and Saturday nights on 10th Street, east of Phillips Avenue, next to Lewis Drug.

Fares serves festival-goers and bar-goers his signature dish of gyros made from lamb, beef or chicken, and the menu also includes shawarma, chislic and French fries. His sons, who have other full-time jobs, help out.

Cooking is a second career for Fares, who was born in Lebanon. He worked for 27 years as a senior systems analyst for Qatar National Bank, one of the largest banks in the Middle East. The family moved to Sioux Falls because his wife’s parents lived here.

Fares concluded he was ready for a “completely different” career and opened the food truck.

On Saturday, King of Gyros will be one of five food trucks at the annual 605 Made Night Market. At the market, Fares will sell his three flavors of gyros.

The free event, featuring more than three dozen creators and live entertainment, will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Raven parking lot at Sixth Street and Phillips Avenue.

605 Made is co-organized by Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage and SiouxFalls.Business. Sponsors include First National Bank of Sioux Falls and Dakota Business Finance. Follow 605 Made Night Market on Facebook here.
