Marjorie Taylor Greene says “they” can control the weather in another baseless conspiracy theory

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is back to doing what she is best known for: spreading conspiracy theories.

The Georgia Republican who famously promoted a conspiracy theory about Jewish space lasers in 2021 was apparently trying to suggest that Hurricane Helene was the product of someone — a menacing but otherwise unidentified “they” — who can control the weather.

Greene wrote on X late Thursday:

This dire warning followed a post earlier in the day with a map showing the areas affected by Helene and their political leanings:

To be clear, the idea of weather-causing technology powerful enough to create a weaponized hurricane has been debunked by experts. (Is cloud seeding a thing? Yes, but that doesn’t seem to be up for discussion here.)

Greene did not specify whether “they” in this weather control scenario are Jews, but such claims about people nefariously controlling the weather have documented links to anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Overall, Greene’s posts certainly give the impression that she believes Hurricane Helene was the result of artificial technology to the detriment of Republicans. This takes a claim that Donald Trump and others in the Republican Party have made — suggesting that federal agencies are intentionally denying aid to Republican residents and instead providing it to undocumented immigrants — and really catapults it into the stratosphere, so to speak. To clarify, FEMA has refuted and corrected Trump’s claims.

As my MSNBC colleague Steve Benen noted, Trump’s lie is particularly egregious in light of new Politico reports (which have not been independently verified by either MSNBC or NBC News) that as president, Trump has repeatedly “hesitant to include disaster relief in the areas he was considering.” areas”. politically hostile.”

The only thing I’m worried about being projected into the atmosphere is the Republicans’ dangerous lies.
