Manchester Airport residents rent driveways for nearly £300

Going on vacation is exciting, figuring out how to get to the airport and where to park your car is less exciting. Those who live near the airport have found a solution: they rent out their driveways to vacationers.

Residents near Manchester Airport are renting out their driveways for up to £278 a week, new research has found, making it the third most expensive driveway rental near an airport in the UK.

Researchers at online used car dealer Cinch analyzed data on alternative parking options at the UK’s major airports and looked at how much money local residents can make from them. The study found that some residents at Manchester Airport are trying to charge up to £278 – one of the highest amounts in the UK.

According to the JustPark website, the most expensive alternative to airport parking is Prinknash Road, which is still a 27-minute walk from the airport. A week-long reservation can cost up to a staggering £278. On the cheaper side, there are other parking spaces on Prinknash Road, available for just £48 per week.

But also consider those flying out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport looking for a driveway to park their car, as these rent out on average for up to £556. Driveways near London Heathrow were the next most expensive at £522.

Driveways near Manchester, East Midlands and London City came in third place with an average cost of £278. Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at Cinch, said: “The rising cost of airport parking presents a real opportunity for people with free driveways near airports.”

“Before you turn your driveway into a parking lot, check how much parking in your area already costs to make sure your prices are competitive so your driveway gets as many bookings as possible.”
