Man whose house caught fire receives help

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A devastating house fire forced a 65-year-old Toledo man to start over. The fire started while he was in the hospital. Now he’s getting help from Yark Automotive Group and 13 Action News.

While Johnnie Jones was recovering in hospital in June, a fire broke out in his house.

“I rolled out of bed and came here. I got here about 12:15 and the whole house was on fire,” Jones said.

His daughters rushed to the scene, and firefighters told 13 Action News they received the 911 call around 11:30 p.m. when a car caught fire on Hausman Street, which then spread to Jones’ home and another home down the street.

TFRD considered the fire suspicious.

“I feel lost. I feel like someone needs to take care of me, someone needs to be punished for what they did to me. They took my whole life away from me,” Jones said.

Jones is staying with his daughter during his recovery.

“My daughter has taken me in, I have a room and a place to sleep and a place to watch TV. I have a home so far and it feels really good,” Jones said.

13 Action News and Yark Automotive Group presented Jones’ family with a check for $1,300 to assist with his recovery. Jones was unable to attend the check presentation because he had to be hospitalized again.
