Man United’s start to the season is no reason to panic – Erik ten Hag

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag said his team’s start to the season was no reason to panic, despite winning just two of their first six Premier League games.

Ten Hag, whose contract was extended in the summer despite United’s ownership looking for possible replacements, is under increasing scrutiny as his team sit 13th in the table after last Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

“We will make this season a success,” said Ten Hag in an interview with Sky Sports.

“Nothing is easy, but that is no reason for me to panic,” he added. “We can solve (the problems), this team can solve it.”

The Dutch coach claimed that he was not worried about his job despite the Spurs defeat and a similar home defeat against Liverpool, leading to rumors that his job would be lost in this week’s Europa League game against Porto and in Sunday’s league game against Aston Villa is at stake.

“I don’t think about it, I don’t worry,” he said. “We created a relationship with the owners and management over the summer.

“We made this agreement and we were all behind it. We know the strategy of signing young players in a transition phase.”

“You also know that in all my last six seasons there have always been trophies in May and that is what we are aiming for.”

Ten Hag added that he knew United were in a transition period when he moved and that he has proven in his two seasons so far that he can win by winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

“From the moment I walked in we knew we had to change. We had to replace some older players,” he said.

“Our decision was to bring in young players and that takes time to understand the messages, get a game model on board and introduce a new culture. That takes time. In the meantime, you have to win, and I think we’ve proven over the last two years that we win.

“I have proven in my career that I will always win. In the last six years I have won eight trophies.”

United travel to the Estadio de Dragão to face Porto on Thursday.
