A “gentle giant” who secretly shared “extremely perverse” videos of the torture of baby monkeys on Facebook has been sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Peter Stanley, 42, was a member of a private Facebook group called “Monkey Sauce,” whose members were encouraged to watch and post their own videos of monkey torture.

Stanley, who previously worked for a law firm, shared three of his own videos in the group and left comments like “This one is my favorite” among other disgusting posts.

However, Stanley did not know that the group had been infiltrated by animal rights activists who passed his Facebook ID on to the police.

During a raid on his house, police seized a cell phone containing 75 videos of monkeys in distress.

It was also discovered that Stanley searched the Internet for terms such as “horse porn” and “how do I know if a baby monkey is in distress?”

After his arrest on March 26, Stanley told police he joined the group out of curiosity. The rules required each member to upload three videos to “prove” they would not report the group to authorities.

The videos, which are between seven and 15 minutes long, show the cruel mistreatment of baby monkeys by people presumably living in Thailand or Indonesia.

The extreme violence inflicted on the monkeys included mutilation and torture with pliers, axes and machetes.

Stanley did not make the videos himself, nor did he directly harm animals, but told the moderators of the group he wanted to join that he “hates monkeys.”

During a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Stanley admitted three counts of publishing obscene material before being jailed this morning.

His arrest came after the broadcast of the BBC documentary “The Monkey Haters,” which revealed the existence of streaming videos depicting the torture of baby monkeys.

Thomas Quirk, senior prosecutor for the Mersey-Cheshire Crown Prosecution Service, said: “The videos posted by Peter Stanley on his Facebook page are truly horrific.”

“The torture inflicted on these animals also included sexual torture and the case was very stressful for both the police and the public prosecutor.

“Why anyone would want to be involved in something like this is beyond comprehension. Peter Stanley apparently published videos of animals being brutally injured for fun.”

Defense attorney Charles Lander said in court today that in two reports the defendant was described as “caring and kind,” and that he was “full of integrity,” but now also full of remorse and regret.

When his arrest became known, he was fired from his job and his partner of eight years ended their relationship. Since then, he has lived with his parents, who described their son as a “gentle giant” and “couldn’t believe they were sitting in the Crown Court”.

Passing sentence, Judge Ian Harris told the defendant: “These offences are absolutely abhorrent and have no place in a civilised society. You were a volunteer, not a conscript.” The judge told the defendant that an immediate prison sentence was “unavoidable” and sentenced him to 20 months in prison.

Sarah Kite, co-founder of Action for Primates, said after the hearing: “We are very grateful to Merseyside Police for taking this action against the posting of videos of monkey torture on Facebook.”

“Those who distribute graphic and obscene content depicting the violent and sadistic torture and killing of baby monkeys must know that their behavior is not only abhorrent, but a crime.”

“We also hope that this prosecution serves as a wake-up call to Meta and other social media companies that continue to allow this extremely disturbing and graphic content to be published on their platforms.”
