Live updates on shooting at Donald Trump’s golf club: Trump unharmed after nearby shooting, FBI describes incident as ‘apparent assassination attempt’

Donald Trump was the target of an apparent assassination attempt in Florida on Sunday, according to the FBI, although the Republican presidential candidate’s campaign team and police confirmed that he was safe and unharmed. The US secret service reported that agents “opened fire on a gunman” near Trump’s golf course and seized an “AK-47 rifle” with a scope and a GoPro camera at the scene.

The suspect fled from the bushes where he was hiding and escaped in a black car. A witness helped police identify the vehicle and authorities were later able to track it down. “We currently have someone in custody who is a potential suspect,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference.

According to Bradshaw, Trump was playing at his golf course in West Palm Beach, near his Mar-a-Lago residence, when the shooter was spotted hiding in bushes one hole ahead of him.

“President Trump is safe following the shooting near him,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung confirmed in a statement, while Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris expressed relief that her political rival was unharmed.

In a fundraising message, Trump reassured his supporters, saying: “Don’t worry! I am safe and sound and no one was hurt. Thank God!”

This is the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months. On July 13, the former president suffered an ear injury during a speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
