Live Updates: Israel attacks Lebanon as wars with Hezbollah and Hamas continue

Smoke rises from the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted a neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs on October 6.

The Israeli military has continued to bomb the Lebanese capital, reportedly carrying out “a series of targeted attacks” on weapons depots and other parts of Hezbollah’s infrastructure. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, 23 people were killed and 93 injured in Israeli strikes across the country on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Israel said it had “surrounded” the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza after detecting the presence of Hamas members in the area. At least 25 people were killed in attacks on a mosque in central Gaza, hospital officials said.

As the anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel approaches, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country is “defending itself on seven fronts.”

Here’s what you need to know:

Attacks on Beirut: Israel bombarded the city with heavy airstrikes overnight. CNN’s Jomana Karadsheh is on the ground in the capital and said Saturday night’s attacks were among the most sustained and intense she has seen since the war between Israel and Hezbollah began. The number of victims of the attacks is not yet known.

Refugee camp surrounded in the Gaza Strip: The Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza has been “encircled,” the Israeli military said, after launching both air and ground operations against what it said was military infrastructure. At least two people were killed and several others were taken to hospital after an apartment in the camp was hit, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said.

Strike against mosque in Gaza: At least 25 people have been killed in an overnight Israeli attack on the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Mosque in central Gaza, hospital officials said. A journalist working for CNN said displaced Palestinians were sheltering in the mosque when it was attacked. The Israeli military said the attack targeted a Hamas “command and control center.” Footage from the crime scene shows people working in the dark to find victims in the rubble, using the light from their phones to see them. Four more people were killed in a strike at a nearby school, hospital officials said.

War on multiple fronts: Netanyahu said Israel was fighting “against the enemies of civilization” on seven fronts, including the Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen and Iran itself. “Rest assured, Israel will fight until “The battle is won – for us and for peace and security in the world,” he said.

Global protests: Thousands of people around the world took to the streets on Saturday to support Palestinians in Gaza. Demonstrations calling for an end to the war took place in London, Dublin, Paris, Manila, Cape Town, Rome and other major cities. Meanwhile, protesters across Israel are calling for more urgent action to free hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.

Key Hezbollah leader missing: Hezbollah has lost contact with a possible successor to its late leader Hassan Nasrallah, a Lebanese security source told CNN on Saturday. Hashem Safieddine was targeted in an Israeli attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday.
