Live updates from Southwest Classic

play

Texas A&M football and Arkansas Razorbacks started fast, but both defenses stepped up in Saturday’s Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium.

After a 21-point first quarter, only 10 points were scored in the second and third quarters before the Razorbacks and Aggies added 10 more in the final quarter. After a Razorbacks field goal, the Aggies were able to get a five-yard touchdown pass to Tre Watson to give them a late lead at 21-17.

The Aggies are led by a defense that continues to swarm and frustrate Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green. Despite Arkansas’ hot start, A&M was able to sack Green twice and force two turnovers.

A&M’s offense picked up first downs but struggled to score. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Aggies still don’t have a lead.

Both teams enter the clash at 3-1, having just secured a win and looking to pick up another win against a long-time rival.

The Aggies have been the rivals of late, winning nine of the last ten meetings. Two of the top 10 running teams in the country will meet on a national stage televised by ESPN.

Texas A&M vs. Arkansas score updates

Arkansas’ last best chance of the game ended when Texas A&M’s Nic Scourton picked off Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green with a sack and the Aggies rallied.

But an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (taunting) and a punt late in the play returned the ball to the A&M 44-yard line instead of the Aggies taking over at the Arkansas 30-yard line. But the Aggies still have the ball. And the leadership. And the clock on her side.

Texas A&M’s drive that started at the 1 ended in a punt, but the Aggies at least made it to the Arkansas 44-yard line and were bleeding a few minutes after halftime. Arkansas, trailing 21-17, will begin its drive at the 10th.

Secured at your own 1-yard line in the final minutes of a 21-17 game? No problem for Marcel Reed, who rolled to his right in the end zone on first down and passed the ball to Jabre Barber for 10 yards, giving him some breathing room after 5 minutes.

On the very next play, Le’Veon Moss broke the line for a 30-yard gain, which became a 45-yard play due to a Razorbacks facemask penalty on an out-of-bounds tackle. This was the Razorbacks’ tenth flag of the day.

…that’s the good news if you’re Texas A&M. The Aggies stopped what appeared to be a dangerous Razorbacks drive that stalled at the A&M 43-yard line. Now the bad news: Arkansas coach Sam Pittman opted for the punt rather than it, and Devin Bale’s coffin corner attempt went out of bounds at the A&M 1-yard line.

This is where the Aggies will begin their push and maintain their 4-point lead.

The Aggies’ offense had been stagnant since the first quarter, but when they needed it most, the unit came through. After Arkansas’ drive that ended with three points and the lead, Reed led his group down the field and ended the possession with a five-yard touchdown pass to Tre Watson, giving them the 21-17 lead.

This game started with several long touchdowns but quickly turned into a defensive battle. Both teams remained scoreless for half of the second quarter and all of the third quarter before the Razorbacks hit a 45-yard field goal to break the tie at 17-14.

What seemed like an offensive shootout calmed down and became more of a defensive battle as the half progressed. Both teams came up with defensive stops, and despite pushing into opposing territory, neither offense was able to score more points after A&M’s game-winning touchdown midway through the second quarter.

After an Aggies punt, the Razorbacks got the ball deep in their own territory and looked to extend their lead. However, Aggies’ defensive lineman Shemar Stewart had other plans.

On a first-down handoff, Stewart attacked the QB-RB mesh point and blasted both players, resulting in a fumble. Aggies’ Scooby Williams grabbed the ball and gave the offense the ball at the Razorback 10-yard line. Two plays later, Reed called his own number from five yards out and A&M tied the game at 14-14.

The Razorbacks are pulling out all the stops early in this game. After a third-down sack by A&M’s Jaydon Hill, Arkansas responded with a fake punt that gained big yards and kept the drive alive. From there, the Razorbacks went on a 10-play, 75-yard possession capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Ja’Quinden Jackson, putting them back on top 14-7.

After the quick score, the Aggies defense responded by forcing a three-pointer on the next possession. From there, the offense only needed three plays before taking advantage of a 58-yard pass from Marcel Reed to Noah Thomas to tie the score at 7-7.

After two good defensive plays from the Aggies defense, the Razorbacks took their first lead of the game with a home run shot. Quarterback Taylen Green connects with Isaac Teslaa for a 75-yard touchdown, giving them an early 7-0 lead.

Shortly before kickoff, the Aggies’ final injury report was released, confirming that Conner Weigman is officially out for tonight’s game and Marcel Reed will start for the third straight game against the Razorbacks.

Like last week, Weigman was seen on the field in street clothes, cheering on his teammates. Reed is 2-0 in his first two appearances and will look to continue his winning streak against Arkansas.
