Kurt Cobain’s daughter and Tony Hawk’s son have given birth to their first child together.

Frances Bean Cobain, the 32-year-old daughter of the late Nirvana frontman, confirmed in an Instagram post on Saturday that she has given birth to her husband Riley Hawk, the famous skateboarder’s 31-year-old son.

She shared several photos of the little boy, who was born on September 17, including one of him being held by his father. Cobain also posted the photo in an Instagram story, accompanied by the John Lennon song “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy).”

“Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk,” she wrote. “Welcome to the most beautiful son in the world. We love you more than anything.”

Tony Hawk celebrated the news in an Instagram comment, writing, “My favorite grandson!” Harper Grohl, whose father is Nirvana alum Dave Grohl, also commented with hearts and teary, smiling emojis. “With all the love and energy in the whole world,” wrote REM frontman Michael Stipe, Frances Bean’s godfather.

Frances Bean Cobain, an artist and model, was the only child of her father and his wife Courtney Love. She confirmed her relationship with Hawk in a 2022 Instagram post in which she shared the “great joy” she experienced the previous year, and the two married in October 2023. She previously married musician Isaiah Silva in 2014 and filed for divorce in 2016.

Like his famous father, Hawk is also a professional skateboarder.

Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994 when his daughter was 20 months old. In an Instagram post in April, she commemorated the 30th anniversary of his death and shared photos of their time together.

“I wish I could have known my father,” she wrote at the time. “I wish I knew the tone of his voice, how he liked his coffee, or what it felt like to sleep after a bedtime story. I always wondered if he caught tadpoles with me in the humid Washington summers, or if he smelled like Camel Lights and Strawberry Nesquik (his favorites, I’m told).”

“But there is also deep wisdom in understanding, on an accelerated path, how precious life is. He gave me a lesson about death that can only be gained through the LIVED experience of losing someone. It is the gift of knowing with certainty that when we love ourselves and those around us with compassion, openness, and grace, the more meaningful our time here inherently becomes.

She added that before she was born, her father wrote her a letter that ended with the message: “Wherever you go or wherever I go, I will always be with you.”

“He has kept that promise because he is present in many ways,” she said. “Whether it’s listening to a song or sharing hands, in those moments I get to spend a little time with my dad and he feels transcendent.”

In a 2019 interview on the RuPaul: What’s the Tee? podcast, Cobain shared that she felt guilty about inheriting money from her father.

“My relationship with money is different because I don’t earn it,” she said. “It’s almost like this big, huge loan that I’ll never get rid of. I have an almost alien relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money came from someone I’ve never met, let alone earned it myself.”
