Knife attack at Walmart – Stafford County Sheriff’s Office

Fortunately, a Walmart employee suffered only minor injuries in an altercation with a 68-year-old man from Fredericksburg.

On August 24th at approximately 2:28 p.m., Deputy DS Jett and Deputy JW McAlister responded to a disturbance at Walmart, 125 Washington Square Plaza. It was reported that a male suspect was being detained by employees after an assault. Since a knife was involved in the altercation, officers quickly arrived on scene and arrested the suspect before investigating what had happened.

It was determined that the suspect, Derrick Jones, began cursing at an employee after being told he was not allowed to chain his bike to the customer service desk. A manager stepped forward to deescalate the situation. As Jones became increasingly agitated, he was asked to leave. He refused and continued to make a scene. When employees called police, Jones grabbed a knife on his hip and attacked the manager. The manager tackled Jones in an attempt to arrest him. Jones continued to grab his knife until another employee was able to pull it from the altercation. Jones continued to resist and even spit in the direction of staff until officers arrived to arrest him. Fortunately, no one was stabbed during the altercation.

Jones was charged with attempted malicious wounding, two counts of assault, disturbing the peace and trespassing. He was held without bail at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
