Longtime Maitland staple Kappy’s Subs will close its doors this week after nearly six decades in business.

Opened in 1967 and owned by the Caplan family since 1972, Kappy’s is known for serving sandwiches from its metal food truck at 501 N. Orlando Ave. It recently added a location at Exploria Stadium and a food truck for special events.

The Caplan family bought the restaurant in 1967 before their daughter Rachel took over and later appointed her son Adam Milsom as general manager and head chef.

The restaurant’s closure was announced in a social media message from Milsom late Monday.

Milsom said they tried to buy the property, but the owners sold it to someone else. At that point, “unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to reach an agreement with the purchaser of the property,” Milsom wrote.

Kappy’s closes on Saturday, September 14th at 4pm

“It has been an absolute honor for me and my family to serve this community for the past 52 years,” he wrote.

Milsom says closing Kappy’s was the hardest thing he’s ever had to do.

“We will be open until we run out of food, or Saturday at the latest, and we will endeavour to serve as many of you as possible. We want to be remembered as people who did their best until the very end,” Milsom wrote.

In another social media post, Milsom expressed his gratitude for the uptick in business Monday night and said the team at Kappy’s is open to exploring what they can do after the restaurant closes, but it will take some time.

Kappy’s is open on the last day of service from 10:30 a.m. until the prepared meals are sold out.

“We will need to make some operational changes to accommodate the massive increase in volume. This is a great problem to have and we love you all,” the post said.
