Kalen DeBoer discusses film preparation for No. 2 Georgia and what he took away from the Kentucky game

Kalen DeBoers The first game in the crucial SEC competition is against one of the best teams in the country, as Georgia is scheduled to visit Alabama. But the Crimson Tide’s new head coach is looking in a few key spots to learn as much as he can about the competition.

First and foremost, he focused on the film of Georgia’s most recent game, a 13-12 win against Georgia Kentucky. Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday, DeBoer shared some of what he took away from that tape, including the fact that Georgia is likely far more dangerous than it seemed that night.

“Yeah, I think the part you said there: It’s still early in the season and so it is – every team is still trying to work out the issues and you hope you have a really good feel for yours “Have identity, but sometimes it’s a little different than you thought,” DeBoer said. “And you’re trying to build that. The Kentucky game against Georgia is just extremely physical and you look at it and try to make something out of it, but you also know, especially in the last week here, that Georgia is going to continue to develop and continue to understand what they do well and find the ways they think they can best attack us.”

But DeBoer also looks beyond the last game on tape.

He knows there is a lot to learn from the last matchup between Alabama and Georgia, the 2023 SEC Championship Game, in which the Crimson Tide defeated the Bulldogs and many of the same players were still on each roster.

“So you look at this game, but you also have to look at more things,” DeBoer said. “Last autumn, last December, the championship, a game was played and the personnel on both sides and also in the scheme are largely identical. Obviously we’re a little different offensively and defensively, but we’ll take things from that and add them to everything else we bring to the game plan.”

DeBoer also talked about an exciting freshman talent

Ryan Williams was a freshman phenom in his first three games at Alabama. However, it wasn’t a surprise to DeBoer considering what he’s seen from the young wideout since arriving on campus.

DeBoer praised Williams during his appearance with McAfee on Friday. He knows how incredible it is when you compare his age to what he has already accomplished through his performances at the college level.

“It’s really cool. What you really try to guard against, especially in the beginning, is too much hype, you know? You know, the summer before he even played a play, in fall camp? You can see every day what he is capable of and what plays he plays.”

“Then when you’re around him you can just see his mindset and how impressive it is considering his age and the experiences or lack of experiences he’s had. He made the plays.”
