Justin Fields’ stressful game vs. Colts could lead to Steelers changing QBs

In the first three games of the season, Justin Fields executed Mike Tomlin’s game plan perfectly. The 25-year-old quarterback played flawless football, led the Steelers’ offense to long, sustained attacks and dominated possession battles while the defense did the heavy lifting.

Unfortunately, he had to do a lot more in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts, and it didn’t go well.

Thanks to poor play on both sides of the football, the Steelers dug themselves into a 17-point hole in the first half. Then Fields tried to do too much.

To make something happen, Fields tried to extend the game in the second half. But he made an incriminating mistake when he ran backwards to avoid the pressure. The Steelers quarterback fumbled the football and gave it back to the Colts (who had a 17-3 lead).

While Indy’s ensuing possession would result in a missed field goal, Fields gave the Pittsburgh offense an opportunity to make something happen. Unfortunately, the talented quarterback reverted to his old habits in Week 4.

We’ve all seen Justin Fields make some incredible plays for the Chicago Bears over the last three years. He has the arm strength to drive the ball deep upfield and the leg strength to lift it up the floor for explosive plays.

However, Fields is known for making poor decisions and putting the ball in danger. That’s what he did when he essentially took points off the board in the second half by fumbling the ball away to the Colts.

For the Steelers to be successful, they must play great defense and take care of the football. Trailing by 14 points, Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback couldn’t put the ball in danger. If these mental errors continue, it’s not hard to imagine a scenario in which head coach Mike Tomlin turns to Russell Wilson when he’s healthy and free to play.

Regardless of the game situation, Justin Fields must show that he can play under control and that he has what it takes to help his team fight back from deficits in football games.
