Josh Harris: Washington Commanders are working “super hard” to find their next home stadium

The Washington Commanders will soon begin their regular season as they conclude preseason play with an exhibition match against the New England Patriots. The return of the regular season will be a new milestone for Washington as they usher in a new era of football.

With an overhaul of the roster, front office and even ownership, the Commanders will have a new look next season. The franchise could soon be back in contention and in the meantime, they will be looking for their next home stadium for their games, owner Josh Harris explained on Sunday.

Washington DC itself has reportedly made targeted investments in the hope of bringing the Commanders back to the city and specifically to the RFK Stadium site.

“We’re working super hard,” Harris said of the search for a new stadium location. “Finding our next home is a big part of my personal life.”

This is not a quick process. Whether it’s in DC, Maryland or even Virginia, a new home stadium for the Commanders will be a while away. Harris even said that 2030 would be a “reasonable goal.”

“There’s no way to predict a specific date,” Harris claimed. “But I think (2030) is a reasonable goal.”

Harris and the franchise have limited control in this matter, and the Washington owner is well aware of that.

“There are political things that have to happen,” Harris continued. “There’s zoning and a whole lot of other things. A lot of that is out of our hands, so there’s no way to predict a specific date, but I think that’s a reasonable goal.”

While it will be some time before there are any concrete answers or dates as to where the club will next play, Harris is hopeful that something will happen in the near future. However, he is aware that this may not happen given the current political situation in the country, which is largely focused on the upcoming election.

“If you look realistically at what’s happening in the Senate, and I’m really at my wits’ end now, there’s not a lot happening, is there?” Harris said. “Everyone’s focused on the election. So this is the kind of thing that would have to be part of a series of bills that would pass in the lame-duck session. So it’s not really realistic to think that’s going to happen before the election.”

Right now, the club is focused on integrating No. 2 overall pick and potential franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels into the team while giving him the tools he needs to reach his potential early. Harris has that under control and could speak from experience.

“I’m super excited to have Jayden join us. I’m very excited about the selection,” Harris said. “I mean, look, you all see what I see, right? He hasn’t been on the field that much, but you see us moving down the field, to a different level. And also, as a person, as a human being, as a worker, as the first one in the training center, the last one out, as a real teammate, as a real leader, as an athlete and just a great person to be around. So I think I’m very, very optimistic and excited to watch him this season.”

It may take some time, but once Harris and his ownership group have a landing spot for their new stadium, we expect the decision to be approached aggressively and with an eye toward a top-quality product, just like everything else Harris has overseen, and so far with pretty solid results.
