Florida’s safety corps looks a bit different than it did a year ago, but returning sophomore (car tag) Jordan Castell (/car tag) stands out as he approaches his second season in the Swamp.

Castell is expected to be the starting free safety in 2024 after starting 11 of 12 games last season. Washington native Asa Turner will play alongside him at strong safety and teach him how to be a position leader.

Florida head coach Billy Napier said Wednesday that he really likes the development of the former West Orange High defensive back.

“He’s just different right now,” Napier said. “He plays faster. He understands the system better. He communicates better. You see him barking calls.”

“I think he would probably tell you that the experienced safeties we’ve brought onto the team have made him a better player. First of all, they do it the right way – their work ethic, their attention to detail, the way they go about their business.”

While Castell has improved off the field, he has continued to improve on it as well. He is still learning the ins and outs of the safety position after playing cornerback in high school. A year of SEC ball should have sped up the process, but Castell’s athletic ability has always been there.

“Jordan is one of a kind,” Napier said. “He’s 6’2″ and 200 pounds. He can cover corners. He’s also a smart player, so this move was a natural for him. He’s got ball skills. He can make plays with the ball.”

Transfer with effects on the entire position space

Castell is not the only one benefiting from the new players in town. In addition to Turner, Tulane transfer DJ Douglas, who is expected to play an important role in the rotation (possibly at STAR), and Oregon transfer Trikweze Bridges are also in the running.

Since there are five other scholarship holders in the squad, there is tough competition for the reserve and third place positions.

“We have a lot of depth there,” Napier said. “I think that leads to everyone raising their level of play. The example of the experienced players and the competition has made the whole group better in my opinion.”
