Jon Stewart on whether he will extend his “Daily Show” airtime after winning an Emmy

Jon Stewart just won his 23rd Emmy on Sunday night — and his first in nearly a decade as part of the team behind “The Daily Show.” Has the success of his weekly return inspired him to perhaps extend his stay with the series?

As Stewart announced earlier this year, he planned to remain on “The Daily Show” as Monday-only anchor until this year’s election. When asked backstage if he was considering extending his stay on the show, Stewart joked that he might have to: “Well, I feel like this election is never going to end. So why should I? How could I leave? I’m not allowed to leave until the election is over, until we’re all stripped to the bone. … We’re looking forward to it being horrible.”

As diversity As has been reported, Stewart’s return was expected to involve a behind-the-scenes oversight role that could last until 2025. However, Stewart’s response may be an indication that executives at Comedy Central and Paramount Global are happy with the hybrid hosting approach on “The Daily Show” and may want to continue with it for the time being.

Also at the desk of the “Daily Show” this year were correspondents such as Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic and Jordan Klepper. On stage, Stewart noted that “they are just awesome” and then brought showrunner Jen Flanz to the microphone. (Flunz has been with “The Daily Show” since 1998.)

“I love this edition of ‘The Daily Show,'” she said in the media center. “I’m very happy to have been a part of so much ‘Daily Show’ history, but especially in this moment when we get to hear so many different voices.”

Backstage, Stewart added, “I love the family of collaborators that we’ve built over all these years. And you know, the beauty of tonight is coming here and seeing everyone come back together with them.”
