Joe Flacco starter? The Curse of Jacksonville lasts 20 years

The Indianapolis Colts’ losing streak on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars ends a decade-long hiatus with a heartbreaking 37-34 loss to the Jags.

The loss puts paid to a valiant comeback attempt by backup quarterback Joe Flacco.

Here are four overreactions after the loss.

Joe Flacco will start the rest of the season

Call it Flacco magic. Let’s call it a few lucky moments against broken defensive coverages. Whatever you want to call it, the Colts’ offense, particularly the passing attack, is performing at a higher level with backup Joe Flacco as the starter.

Flacco led an improbable fourth-quarter comeback against the Jaguars, scoring four times in the fourth quarter, including three touchdown passes. Flacco completed 33 of 44 yards for 359 yards and the three passing touchdowns.

Flacco has given the offense a boost and deserves a chance to continue as the team’s starter. Flacco remaining on the roster doesn’t mean Richardson’s time as a long-time starter is over. With Flacco at the helm, Richardson can heal and learn how to lead an offense out of his own pocket like Flacco does.

Colts CB Jaylon Jones will make the Pro Bowl

Talk about a scouting victory. Former seventh-round pick Jaylon Jones has gone from an unknown to one of the Colts’ best defensive players. Two weeks after throwing two interceptions against the Chicago Bears, Jones forced a fumble against the Jacksonville Jaguars, showing an uncanny knack for making plays on the football.

The Colts’ secondary was a big question mark early in the season. General manager Chris Ballard tried to address the issue last season by selecting four defensive backs in the 2023 NFL Draft. Of those picks, Jones was the final selection and the only one still on the active roster (JuJu Brents and Daniel Scott are on injured reserve. Darius Rush was released last season).

Jones, a former five-star recruit from Texas A&M, has great size at 6-2, 203 pounds. He didn’t have an interception as a rookie but has two so far this season. Jones has all the tools to be a shutdown corner and I think he will make the Pro Bowl this season. While there’s still a risk that he’ll miss out on the long finish from time to time, his ability to make plays on the football makes his coverage errors more gratifying.

Colts RB Tyler Goodson will start next week and reach 100 total yards

The eye test doesn’t lie, and backup running back Tyler Goodson appears to be the Colts’ most explosive rusher with starter Jonathan Taylor out with an ankle injury.

Goodson showed off his big-play skills as a pass catcher and rusher, totaling 57 yards. Goodson is a more natural pass catcher than Trey Sermon, and the former Iowa star has a burst that Sermon doesn’t possess. Sermon’s pass blocking will keep him on the field, but Goodson deserves more reps in the backfield.

Taylor’s injury does not require placement on injured reserve, but the Colts star will likely need another week to heal. Without Taylor, I think Goodson will reach the 100-yard mark next week against the Tennessee Titans.

The Colts will go another decade without a win in Jacksonville

These are called overreactions for a reason.

Going a decade without a win in Jacksonville seems impossible, but the Jags just made it happen. Going two decades without a win in Jacksonville seems equally far-fetched, but the Colts clearly can’t exorcise the demons that haunt them at EverBank Stadium.

Sometimes a team only has your number and the Jaguars own the Colts in Florida. I think it will be at least 20 years before they get a W in Florida.
