Jeweler chases away robbers • Possible charges in Na’Ziyah Harris case • West Nile in Metro Detroit

When masked thieves entered Mariam Jewelry in Dearborn last week, the owner knew what was going on.

“They came in holding the gun and a bag. It was a blue bag – and they had a hammer in it,” said Ali Alasadi. “They came running.”

Alasadi ran into the back room where his father was while the thieves stuffed a wall of gold into a travel bag.

“They shot, one shot, and then they told us, ‘Stay down, I’ll shoot you,'” he said.

Then his father took action.

“My father opened the door and tried to get the gun and shoot into the sky, onto the roof,” Alasadi said. “He didn’t want to shoot them, he wanted to scare them.”

The shots frightened the suspects, they dropped their travel bags and fled in a black Mazda 3, probably a 2010 model, without a license plate. The police are now searching for the suspects.

Charges could be brought in the disappearance of Na’Ziyah Harris

Eight months after 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris disappeared after getting off a bus in Detroit, charges could now be filed against her, her family says.

Just hours after the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that an arrest warrant request was being reviewed by the Detroit Police Department, an impromptu search took place.

“I just go by community concerns and stuff like that and took it upon myself to look and just talk to the neighbor and that’s how we ended up there,” said Harris’ cousin Roxy.

Roxy has been searching for her cousin since January. The search on Thursday was streamed live on Facebook.

“It’s a great feeling for me to have support because I often feel like I’m all alone here,” said Roxy.

Roxy said she will continue the search, especially if new clues emerge.

Judge removed from office after teenager was handcuffed

Detroit Judge Kenneth King is temporarily absent from the trial after he ordered a 16-year-old girl handcuffed because she fell asleep and allegedly insulted him.

The incident was captured on video by the court via Zoom.

“If you fall asleep in my courtroom again, I’ll put you in the back, understand?” he said.

The teenager was on an outing with the environmental nonprofit Greening of Detroit on Tuesday. King expressed his displeasure with her behavior after she fell asleep twice in the courtroom.

“Why are you disrespecting this court?” King asked. “You sleep at home, in your bed – not in the courtroom. And quite frankly, I don’t like your attitude.”

William McConico, the chief judge of the 36th District Court, issued a statement Thursday saying a review had been conducted and King would be removed from office and would receive the necessary training to address “the underlying issues that contributed to this incident.”

West Nile virus discovered in Oakland County

Don’t forget the bug spray this weekend. West Nile virus has been detected in three birds and the first 2024 mosquito population captured for testing in Oakland County.

No human cases of the virus have been confirmed so far, but people are urged to be cautious outdoors as mosquitoes in the region transmit West Nile virus.

Although there is no cure, most people with West Nile virus recover completely, the health department said. However, fatigue may persist.

In addition, about 1 in 150 infected people develop a severe illness that can affect the central nervous system. Recovery can take several months. Some damage to the central nervous system can be permanent. In rare cases, the disease can be fatal.

Prevention is the best protection.

The Democratic presidential candidate is pushing for tax relief for middle- and low-income families and individuals and wants to increase the child tax credit to up to $3,600 – and even to $6,000 for children in their first year of life.

According to the Associated Press, Harris wants to increase the earned income tax credit for people in low-paying jobs without children, which Harris’ campaign projects could lower their tax rate by $1,500. The vice president also wants to reduce health insurance premiums through the Affordable Care Act.
