Jesse Winker slams his helmet after extending the Mets’ lead in Game 3

MILWAUKEE – Essentially a wrestling villain, Jesse Winker is hated by many fans.

However, it’s not just the Brewers’ fan base that despises the Mets’ DH/outfielder: the opposing club didn’t seem to care about him.

Winker, a short-lived and struggling Brewer in 2023, emerged as a heel and got the last laugh in Thursday’s 4-2 series win in Game 3 at American Family Field.

Winker, who exchanged heated words with Milwaukee shortstop Willy Adames in Game 1, was once again in the thick of things.

Winker was relentlessly booed every time he stepped to the plate and faced Devin Williams two batters into the ninth inning after Pete Alonso’s blast gave the Mets the lead.

And sure enough, Winker was drilled, just as he was by Frankie Montas on Friday and just as he was plunked by Tobias Myers in the fifth inning.

Winker, appearing to benefit from the taunts, then brushed off second and slowly stood, controlled by manager Carlos Mendoza and a trainer.

He had back pain that required an MRI on Friday.

Winker stayed in the game, soon moved around third and grounded home headfirst on a single by Starling Marte. After scoring the insurance run, Winker stood up, speared his helmet – shattering it in the process – and walked back to the visitors’ dugout as boos rained down on him.

Of course, that’s how this series would end for Winker, who exchanged combative words with Adames on Tuesday. Adames told the Post’s Jon Heyman that he waited in the stadium parking lot after the game to resolve differences, just as he had threatened to do.
