Jennifer Lopez and Sheryl Lee Ralph praise Liza Colón-Zayas’ Emmy win for “The Bear”

The bear Star Liza Colón-Zayas is celebrated for her big win at the 2024 Emmys!

Latinx stars are praising 52-year-old Colón-Zayas after she took home her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Shortly after the milestone ceremony, John Leguizamo gave the Allswell in New York In his speech, he acknowledged the importance of hiring diverse talent.

“My friend Liza Colón-Zayas – she won for The bearthe charming story of white people obsessed with Michelin stars and wanting to make kale taste good,” he joked, also mentioning Latina actresses Selena Gomez, Sofía Vergara, Issa López and Nava Mau (who is also the first transgender person ever to be nominated for an Emmy for a miniseries).

Sheryl Lee Ralph also dedicated an Instagram post to Colón-Zayas, sharing photos of the two as well as a video of them dancing in their dresses.

“When my sister @lizacolonzayas_lcz won, it felt like I won too! Her talent, her brilliance, her heart – it all shone on that stage,” Ralph wrote in the caption. “You so deserved this moment, Liza. Watching you win was like watching a dream come true! Congratulations, my sister. You deserve this moment and more! #emmys.”

Jennifer Lopez used her Instagram stories to celebrate the actress.

“Yayyyy @lizacolonzayas_lcz 👏👏👏,” Lopez wrote over a video of Colón-Zayas accepting her award.

In her own speech, Colón-Zayas thanked the people in her life who helped her get to where she is today, giving special credit to Ralph, 67, and other famous colleagues for her success.

“Thank you for putting the mic down for me,” she joked. “Thank you to my husband David Zayas, he told me to write a speech and I didn’t because I didn’t think it was possible. How could I have thought it was possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle and Sheryl Lee Ralph. I love you all, I adore you from the bottom of my heart. My mommy, mommy, thank you. My family, my grandchildren, thank you.”

“Thank you for giving me a new life with this show. And to all the Latinas who watch me: keep believing and go vote. Vote for your rights,” she concluded her speech.

Her victory was just one of The bear’s 11 wins and 23 total nominations this year. The series also won for outstanding casting, writing and directing. It was also nominated for outstanding comedy series.

Colón-Zayas plays Tina Marrero in the hit FX series, which follows a Chicago restaurant and its eclectic kitchen staff as they steadily rise through the ranks in the kitchen of Chef Carmy (played by Jeremy Allen White, who won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy).
