James Earl Jones’ “Field of Dreams” co-star Kevin Costner pays touching tribute to his late star

Hollywood mourns the loss of legendary actor James Earl Jones.

Jones, who provided the voice of Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” franchise and Mufasa in the 1994 and 2019 “The Lion King” films, died Monday morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, surrounded by his family, his spokesman confirmed to ABC News.

He was 93 years old.

His “Star Wars” co-star Mark Hamill wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “#RIP Dad 💔.” In the films, Hamill played Luke Skywalker, the son of Darth Vader.

In addition to Star Wars and The Lion King, Jones, who received an honorary Oscar in 2012, has also made his mark in film and television, playing many iconic roles in his career, including Terrence Mann in the 1989 film Field of Dreams, in which he co-starred with Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta and Gaby Hoffman. He also portrayed King Jaffe Joffer in Coming to America and Coming to America 2, alongside Eddie Murphy and more.

Kevin Costner: Costner, who starred with Jones in Field of Dreams, posted a touching message on Instagram about his late co-star. In his message, Costner highlighted Jones’ talent and “kindness” and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. Costner wrote, “Anyone who has seen the film knows that he would not be the same with anyone else in his role. Only he could bring that kind of magic to a film about baseball and an Iowa cornfield.”

“Rest in peace, friend,” Costner concluded.

Rob Minkoff: Minkoff, the director of the 1994 film “The Lion King,” shared a 1993 photo with Jenkins on Instagram and wrote about how “blessed” he was to work with Jones.

“I just learned of the passing of the great James Earl Jones,” Minkoff said. “His portrayal of Mufasa was perfect. What a powerful man and actor. He is gone but will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.”

Barry Jenkins: “Legendary forever and ever,” Barry Jenkins wrote in the caption of an Instagram post that showed a black-and-white photo of Jones.

Octavia Spencer: “I am incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of #JamesEarlJones today,” Spencer wrote in an Instagram post. “Legendary doesn’t even begin to describe his iconic roles and his impact on cinema forever.”

LeVar Burton: Burton, who starred with Jones in the 1980 film “Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones,” took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and said, “There will never be another human being with this special combination of characteristics.”

Colman Domingo: “Rest well. Thank you for everything. Everything. Everything,” the “Rustin” actor wrote on Instagram. “We all looked up to you. Thank you King James Earl Jones. Rest well.”

Robert Iger: Disney CEO Bob Iger paid tribute to Jones’ career in a moving tribute shared on Disney’s Instagram page.

“From the gentle wisdom of Mufasa to the menacing threat of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones has voiced some of the greatest characters in film history,” said Iger. “An acclaimed stage actor with nearly 200 film and television credits, he brought stories to life with his uniquely commanding presence and truly witty personality that have left an indelible mark on generations of audiences. On behalf of all of us at Disney, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Garcelle Beauvais: “Words cannot express how sad this makes me!” Jones’ “Coming to America” ​​co-star Garcelle Beauvais said in an Instagram post. “Thank you for blessing us with your talent and soul! It was a pleasure working with you and getting to know you #jamesearljones 🙏🏾🖤 restinpower.”

Paul Feig: “James Earl Jones will never die,” the director wrote on X. “His talent, his work and his influence will always be with us. RIP, Mr. Jones.”

Wendell Pierce: “Genius personified,” Pierce wrote on X. “Humanity incarnate. Artistry at its highest level. A personal hero with monumental talent. The likes of him come along only once in a generation. The news of his death breaks my soul.”

Rosario Dawson: “May the force be with you,” Dawson wrote in the caption of an Instagram post. “Rest in peace King James, THANK YOU”

Kerry Washington: “Your voice has left a lasting mark on film and theater,” Washington wrote in a post on X. “Your roles have shaped our imagination. Your legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, Mr. Jones 🤍”

Debbie Allen: “Today we lost our Big Daddy,” the actress, dancer and singer wrote on Instagram. “#JamesEarlJones will forever be remembered as THE GOAT. It was truly a privilege to direct him and a blessing to be loved by him. We will forever speak his name and tell the great stories that will become legends and myths and shape generations to come.”
