IU football coach Curt Cignetti urges fans to turn out against Maryland

play

IU football is 4-0, and a win Saturday over Maryland would make it 5-0 for the first time since the Hoosiers’ only Rose Bowl season (yes, IU has made a Rose Bowl).

Admittedly, the competition in the three home games wasn’t particularly enticing (FIU, Western Illinois and Charlotte), but under first-year head coach Curt Cignetti, IU is on fire. The Hoosiers rank second in touchdowns scored, trailing only Texas at No. 1.

Osterman: With one of the biggest IU home games in years, Curt Cignetti needs you there.

However, it was quite noticeable at home games that the student section of Memorial Stadium pretty much emptied out after halftime. There have been complaints about hot weather, poor WiFi so students can’t snap during games, and no halftime entertainment to keep people interested.

The IU coach says Snapchatting, among other things, can wait. Get in the stands and cheer on his team. Cignetti sent a message to students’ email inboxes asking them to stop by remain for the Hoosiers’ Saturday opener against Maryland, despite expected wet conditions due to the remnants of Hurricane Helene.

Here is his note to the students:

“We’re trying to do something special on Saturday and I want our IU students to experience it there.”

“It has been 57 years since IU football started the season 5-0, but we have a chance to do it on Saturday with a win over a very good Maryland team. We have every intention of achieving this and I ask for your support. We need you in the first quarter and especially in the third quarter.

“When the clock hits zero and we’re 5-0, I want you to be there to celebrate a historic victory with us.”

“The tailgates can wait. The parties can wait. If you need to learn, that can wait.”

“Good things are happening at IU Football and you are a big part of it.

“I look forward to seeing you for four quarters on Saturday.”
