Iowa State football improves to 5-0 with win over Baylor

AMES – The Iowa State football team’s strong start to the season has reached another level of historic proportions.

No. 16 Iowa State remained undefeated and added another big win to its memorable start to the season by defeating Big 12 Conference foe Baylor 43-21 on Saturday night at Jack Trice Stadium.

Quarterback Rocco Becht threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns for the Cyclones, who overcame a poor start and a second-half deficit to claim their latest victory.

Running back Jaylon Jackson added 107 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Iowa State improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1980 and just the fifth time ever. The most recent win moved the Cyclones to 2-0 in conference play for the first time since 2020.

It wasn’t easy, however, after Iowa State struggled with a slow start and had to overcome a 21-19 deficit in the third quarter.

Baylor, which scored touchdowns on its first two drives, kept Iowa State out of the end zone early. The Cyclones stayed in the game thanks to two field goals from Kyle Konrardy that cut the lead to 14-6 in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Iowa State finally reached the end zone when Becht fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ben Brahmer to put the Cyclones within 14-12 of Baylor.

Baylor’s lead wouldn’t last until halftime.

Iowa State took advantage of a big mistake by Baylor when Bears punter Palmer Williams fumbled the snap and his kick was blocked by Myles Mendeszoon. Iowa State’s Caden Matson picked up the ball and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

Iowa State missed a chance to extend its lead late in the second quarter when Becht was picked off deep in Baylor territory.

Baylor opened the second half with an impressive performance. The Bears converted on fourth-and-3 from the Iowa State 25-yard line when quarterback Sawyer Robertson evaded defenders and fired a 25-yard touchdown pass into the end zone to give them a 21-19 lead .

The Cyclones responded immediately. They used a five-play, 75-yard scoring drive to retake the lead when Jackson, who was nearly tackled in the backfield, stayed on his feet and reached the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown.

Baylor marched down the field and into Iowa State territory. But the drive ended when Robertson’s lob into the end zone was deflected by Iowa State’s Jontez Williams.

Iowa State benefited from turnover. Three plays after converting on fourth down, Becht fired an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Higgins to give Iowa State a 33-21 lead.

The Cyclones have a chance to move to 6-0 when they play at West Virginia on Saturday, October 12th at 7 p.m
