INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana,–The Indianapolis Airport Authority has announced record-breaking passenger numbers for the first half of 2024: Between January and June, over 5.2 million passengers passed through Indianapolis International Airport (IND).
“The data from the first and second quarters show that we are seeing 10 percent more passenger traffic than in 2023 and 2019,” said Mario Rodriguez, Managing Director of the IAA. “In fact, five of the ten busiest days in the airport’s history so far have been in 2024, and four of them in 2023.”
The summer travel season also saw a huge increase, with May and June 2024 setting new passenger records. June became the busiest month in IND’s history with 995,139 travelers, driven by events such as Olympic swimming qualifiers and continued demand for summer travel. The three busiest months for IND are currently June, March and May 2024.
Airline seating capacity at IND increased 7% starting in 2023, with the airport benefiting from Indianapolis hosting major sporting events and conferences. IAA expects to reach a record 10 million passengers by the end of 2024, with robust travel patterns continuing into the fall and holiday season. To avoid delays, passengers should check flight information, arrive on time and follow TSA procedures.
“It’s a constant sight, especially between 5 and 7 a.m. when many passengers depart IND Airport,” said Keith Berlen, senior director of operations and public safety at IAA. “And we’re doing our part to ensure a positive customer experience at the airport, and with a few small adjustments, passengers can have a pleasant travel experience as well.”
The Indianapolis Airport Authority operates Indiana’s largest airport system, which includes many rural airports and the Downtown Heliport. IND generates $7.5 billion in economic impact for Indiana without relying on state or local taxes. The airport, which employs over 54,000 people statewide, has repeatedly been ranked as the largest airport in North America due to its convenience, facilities, customer service and local offerings. IND is also home to the second largest FedEx operation in the world and the eighth largest cargo facility in the country.
