Hurricane Helene leaves widespread power outages in Georgia

As Hurricane Helene continues to cause widespread disruption across Georgia, more than 1.1 million residents are currently without power.

As of 10:30 a.m. Friday, the storm had caused significant outages affecting numerous counties across the state. In total, 22.1% of Georgia’s electricity customers are affected, with 1,083,629 outages reported out of 4,910,826 customers tracked.

10 counties in Georgia are 100% without power

South Georgia counties were hardest hit by the initial brunt of Hurricane Helene. Counties that are completely without power are:

  • Candler County
  • Colquitt County
  • Evans County
  • Lincoln County
  • Long County
  • Lowndes County
  • Taliaferro County
  • Tattnall County
  • Tift County
  • Wilkes County

The Savannah and Augusta areas are severely affected by power outages

As of 10:30 a.m., the following counties in USA TODAY’s coverage area are experiencing the following outages:

Bryan County The country is also suffering severe impacts: a staggering 95.3% of its power grid has failed. Of the 22,060 customers recorded, 21,016 are currently without power.

Columbia County This is closely followed by 65,080 out of 70,432 customers with a 92% power outage.

Effingham County reports an 83.4% outage, leaving 34,052 residents in the dark.

Richmond County has 77.9% of its power outage, impacting 79,321 of 101,816 customers tracked.

Chatham County 67.3% of residents are without electricity, a total of 116,128 out of 172,584 customers.

Oconee County And Clarke County are also facing outages: 14.6% and 17.9% of power grids are down, respectively. In Oconee County, 2,978 outages were reported from 20,446 customers tracked.

In Clarke County, there were 12,546 outages with 70,197 customers recorded.

As recovery efforts continue, residents are urged to stay safe and follow local advisories.
