How Vanderbilt defeated Alabama football in an upset win

Clark Lea had a number in mind for how many possessions his Vanderbilt team should allow Alabama football offensively on Saturday.

10.

The Commodores reached exactly that number in a surprising 40-35 win over the No. 1 Crimson Tide in Nashville.

“I’m proud of the way we fought,” Lea said after the win. “If you look at the game itself, we knew we had to limit possession. This is an explosive offense. It’s a good Alabama team. I have a lot of respect for Kalen (DeBoer) and I thought his guys fought.”

Vanderbilt just sat on Alabama for most of the game. The Commodores dominated the possession battle, holding the ball 42:08 compared to the Crimson Tide’s 17:52.

UA made plays when it had the ball. The Tide pulled within two points twice in the second half, but were never able to fully overcome the deficit.

“This requires a team that plays together,” said Lea. “That means all three phases are intertwined, and I’m proud of that. If you look at it, I think we kept the ball for 42 minutes. That’s how you win games like this against good teams.”

Lea’s team was able to stay on the field on third down and convert 12 of 18. It ran 75 games, the Crimson Tide had 46.

After the game, enthusiastic Vanderbilt fans stormed the field at FirstBank Stadium and threw a series of goal posts into the Cumberland River. Lea, a VU graduate himself, became emotional as he began speaking to reporters.

The Commodores will be back in action next week at Kentucky. But on Saturday they enjoyed the victory.

“We needed the next unit, no matter what had happened before, the next unit to step on the field and dictate the energy on the field,” Lea said. “And that’s what we did.”

Alabama will face South Carolina next Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
