How to watch Rhode Island in Minnesota and three keys to the Gophers’ victory

Week 2 of the season and the Gophers host an FCS opponent to hopefully do well.

The Rams scored a game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left to secure their Week 1 victory over Holy Cross.

3 KEYS

  • Change your best – No more silly and time-related mistakes. They’ve had 10 days to sort things out and need to play a much cleaner game.
  • Win the Line of Scrimmage – Both lines must represent a force.
  • Dominate the third attempt – Get off the field on defense. Trust that they can make stops on third down.

OPPONENT PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

  • #7 QB – Devin Farrell – The Rams’ new quarterback was the team’s best passer and runner last week. He’s the guy the defense needs to keep in check. It’s worth mentioning that Farrell also had 4 fumbles last week, 3 of which were recovered by the offense.
  • #8 LB – AJ Pena – Best returning tackler from last season. Pena was third on the All-CAA team last year with 15.5 TFLs and 9 sacks.

FORECAST

This is a “get it right” game for the Gophers. It’s time to fix the problems, eliminate some of the thinking errors and flex your Big Ten muscles against the FCS opponent.

However, PJ Fleck has a long history of going vanilla in these games, making them much closer than they need to be, so be prepared to sweat a little. Brosmer faced the Rams a year ago and threw for over 300 yards in an overtime loss. Don’t expect a loss, or many passing yards.
