Back-to-school season is here, which means that applying for their next academic projects, internships, or first jobs is at the top of many students’ lists. Whether you’re just starting your career or have been on the job market for decades, there’s one thing we can all agree on: creating a resume that will catch the attention of recruiters is challenging.

Landing a job that matches your qualifications and expectations is hard enough. You also need to summarize all of your professional experience and strengths in an application – and the heart of that application is your resume.

The ideal resume is a concise one-page document that highlights your academic, professional, and leadership accomplishments. It’s as difficult to put together as it sounds. ChatGPT by OpenAI can make the resume building process a breeze.

How ChatGPT can help you build your resume

ChatGPT can help you generate ideas and bullet points for your role from scratch, or refine and optimize your current points that aren’t hitting the mark. Beyond the key points, the AI tool can also help you answer questions about how to put together your resume, so you can get started.

Side note: We use ChatGPT, but you can use any AI chatbot you want – there are many powerful AI chatbots to choose from.

ChatGPT will help you with your resume text, but you’ll need to choose a template first. The program you use to write your resume – for example, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or Canva – probably already has a resume template.

A quick Google search for resume templates will also yield hundreds of editable templates that you can import into the program of your choice.

As of April 1, 2024, OpenAI no longer requires ChatGPT to log in. You can now access ChatGPT simply by visiting ChatGPT’s website. However, if you want to use certain benefits, such as revisiting the chat later, analyzing PDFs, or digitizing handwritten notes, you will need to log in to access those features.

Signing up is easy. Go to OpenAI’s ChatGPT homepage and open an account by logging in to OpenAI or using your existing Google or Microsoft account. ChatGPT is free, so the sign-up process is simple and doesn’t require any credit cards or obscure information.

If you want ChatGPT to create a resume text from scratch, all you have to do is ask.

Whether you want to create a professional summary or a single bullet point, ask directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, “Can you write a short, professional summary of my role as a tech reporter?” Within seconds, it generated what you see in the screenshot below.

Although ChatGPT can create content that’s ready to copy and paste into a resume, you should customize the text so that it’s tailored to your experience and doesn’t look like it was written by a chatbot.

Employers want to know what makes you unique. Without your help, the chatbot can only access general content related to your role. You can also use the Custom Instructions feature to share some details about your role and interests that ChatGPT can reference when outputting the text to give it a little more nuance.

Whether you fill out the template yourself before seeking ChatGPT’s help, or you have an existing resume you want to improve, ChatGPT is a great resource for polishing writing.

All you have to do is copy and paste your text and ask ChatGPT to improve it.

For example, I asked ChatGPT, “Can you make this bullet point on my resume sound better: ‘I write stories about technology.'” Within seconds, it produced a detailed bullet point that took on a professional tone and made this simple sentence more complex, as seen in the screenshot above.

Once you get your result, you can always tell ChatGPT to optimize it even further with prompts like “Make it shorter” or “Can you add (additional details)?”
