How to pre-order the PS5 Pro: release date and where to buy the charged console

Gaming chair warriors on X may spend all day debating the console wars and why the next big release is doomed to fail, but many game lovers simply don’t care.

Ultimately, a mix of high enough demand and limited stock means that the PS5 Pro, regardless of its £699.99 price tag, could sell out in a heartbeat.

Does that mean you can’t get one? Of course not. If you really want it and have the cash, you can – no, should – try to get it once pre-orders go live.

Here’s what you need to know to secure a PS5 Pro, including the release day dos and don’ts for potential buyers.

So what’s all the hype about anyway? The PS5 Pro features an improved GPU with 45 percent more graphics power, which will significantly improve the visuals – especially the lighting effects – in games.

The PS5 Pro does not come with a vertical stand, which can be purchased separately for £25.

Demanding titles should run smoother, potentially reaching a more consistent 60 fps or even 120 fps at stunning 4K resolution.

This extra power will also be used for improved ray tracing, a fancy term for recreating light and reflections in games. Virtual reality games on PS VR 2 will benefit in a similar way, improving the quality of thousands of older PS4 games with AI.

Hardcore gamers with high visual demands will no longer have to choose between performance and fidelity modes (or higher graphics or higher frame rate) by putting in the extra hard work in games.

Notably, the Pro can only play digital games by default, but similar to the PS5 Slim, a drive can be purchased separately and connected.

One of the best previews of the PS5 Pro comes from Digital Foundry, which examined the visual improvements in 11 games, including Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us Part 2, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

The upgrades vary by game, and how much you notice them depends on how far away you sit from your TV and how well trained your eyes are on the game graphics.

F1 24 brings one of the most interesting upgrades. Not only are the graphics a little sharper or more detailed, but the way the lighting is modelled makes the cars sit more realistically in the environment. While you might not be able to put your finger on why, it makes the game feel a little more like a video replay of a real race.

When do pre-orders for the PS5 start?

Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro begin worldwide on Thursday 26 September and at 10am in the UK.

Initially, the console will only be sold through the PlayStation Direct online store in select regions, including the UK.

According to Sony, pre-orders will begin at participating retailers on October 10, so if you miss the first batch, you’ll have a second chance to grab a copy later.

The console will then be available at Amazon, Argos, John Lewis, Game and other stores.

What about the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition?

It may be difficult to get your hands on a PS5 Pro, but it will be nearly impossible to buy the 30th Anniversary Collection model. Sony recently unveiled the Retro model, which pays tribute to the greyed-out design of the original PS1 and comes with vintage-style DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, as well as a number of other extras.

Only 12,300 copies of the PS5 Pro special edition will be available at launch. As with the regular PS5 Pro, pre-orders for this version will begin on Thursday, September 26th, via PlayStation Direct. Sony is keeping the price secret until launch.

When is the release date of the PS5 Pro?

From November 7th, the PS5 Pro will be available in brick-and-mortar stores and other online locations.

How to secure a PS5 Pro pre-order

Since there is initially only one way for the British to pre-order the PS5 Pro, they could be at a disadvantage compared to regions where the console is available from multiple retailers (such as Australia).

However, there are ways you can improve your chances of snagging one. First, create a PlayStation Network account in advance if you don’t already have one. You’ll need this account to check out at PlayStation Direct.

It also doesn’t hurt to log into the store beforehand and enter your payment and shipping information. The goal is to save time on pre-order day and to gain an advantage over the other unscrupulous buyers, black marketeers and bots.

Maybe even have an extra device handy in case the site crashes during high traffic. If you’re shopping on a phone, have a tablet or laptop handy, and vice versa. And if it doesn’t work the first time, keep hitting the refresh button, especially if the site freezes.

While you’re here, you might also want to consider buying the PS5 disc drive for an extra £100 if you plan on playing physical games on the console. There’s no rush, as the console won’t ship until or after the release date – and you can get the add-on from plenty of other stores too.
