How Israel Eliminated Nasrallah: Step-by-Step Breakdown

In a secret and sophisticated operation, the Israel Defense Forces and Military Intelligence Directorate managed to assassinate Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah in the heart of the Dahiya district in Beirut. That’s how it happened.

Using advanced intelligence and a brilliant deception that included the prime minister’s escape to the United States, security forces attacked the organization’s leadership in one of the most significant military operations.

The former head of the intelligence department, Aaron Haliva, had already considered the possibility of a targeted assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah on October 11, due to the intelligence agency’s advanced capabilities.

This capability, which military intelligence had built up over many years, was not present during the Second Lebanon War, when there was no idea where he was hiding and the dossier on him was minimal, if not operationally useless.

Security sources said the political, intelligence and operational prerequisites for Nasrallah’s assassination were clear by Wednesday. Military intelligence again recommended action and the political echelon agreed to it after being familiarized with the confidential and sensitive intelligence information collected to close the loop.

Preparations and the decision for the targeted attack began on Wednesday. The nerve-wracking wait was to obtain accurate and high-quality intelligence to more accurately determine the timing of the Hezbollah leadership’s meeting, which expressed arrogance and dissatisfaction with the IDF’s intelligence and firepower capabilities.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continued as before, giving the green light for the ceasefire process to progress and deciding to fly to the United States on the “Wing of Zion” plane (Israeli version of Air Force One), which is apparently part of a deception maneuver, to lull the Hezbollah leadership, which has taken the bait.

Otherwise, the leadership meeting in an underground headquarters that served as the Shiite organization’s command center in the heart of Beirut’s Dahiya district would not have taken place.

Security consultations were held throughout the Wing of Zion aircraft’s flight to the United States, seeking information about developments in Lebanon and the preparedness of the intelligence and air forces to carry out an attack from which no one could escape once in the underground network.

On Thursday evening, the Cabinet met in a telephone meeting that ended at 4 a.m. Israel time and 9 a.m. New York time. The prime minister led the preparations from his hotel room in the United States after consulting with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Mossad chief David Barnea. After the technical discussion, Netanyahu and Gallant were authorized to approve the targeted assassination based on incoming intelligence information.

At around 10:00 a.m. Israel time on Friday, Netanyahu held another security consultation with the Defense Minister and the Chief of Staff based on the latest intelligence. According to Israeli sources, intelligence information was received shortly before Netanyahu’s UN speech. The IDF completed preparations and increased the readiness and vigilance of surveillance and air defense systems.

Another consultation took place and Netanyahu gave the green light to the targeted assassination that would shock the Middle East and the Arab world. The Luftwaffe command gave the green light for arming aircraft with bunker-destroying bombs. The chief of staff and defense minister descended into the “Pit,” the IDF’s underground base in Tel Aviv, accompanied by the head of military intelligence, Major General Shlomi Binder, the air force commander, Major General Tomer Bar, and the head of the IDF, Operations Major General Oded Basiuk. A large number of fighter planes took off, and as soon as the signal was given, they began to drop dozens of bombs one after another, reporting “Alpha” one after another on the communication network. The clouds of smoke were visible from afar.

Unmanned aircraft transmitted images to the air force “pit” as buildings collapsed in the heart of the Dahiya district. Unlike the previous failed assassination of Ali Karaki, this time the scale was lethal due to the limited amount of ammunition. Nasrallah and Hezbollah’s Southern Front commander Ali Karaki were killed on the spot along with other senior figures. The rest is history.
