Horror detail in a 0-a-week rental apartment in Brisbane

In Brisbane’s inner north, a garage is being offered for rent for $280 a week, causing outrage among tenants who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The “locked” space – in a sort of windowless garage in Kelvin Grove – was listed on Facebook Marketplace as “available immediately”.

The room was described as a “quiet and safe place”, just 350 m from an Aldi and a bus stop.

Tenants sharply criticized the “shabby” ad in a Facebook group.

“Is this what I think?” asked a woman.

“I wish people would stop thinking this is okay,” added another.

“I’m not sure, but isn’t it a law that bedrooms/living rooms must have windows,” said a third.

In Queensland, the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 sets out the rights and responsibilities of parties involved in residential tenancies, including a set of minimum standards for housing.

“Although the law does not contain a definition of what constitutes a room, the minimum standards require that rental properties must be fitted with curtains or other window coverings that provide privacy in rooms where the tenant could reasonably expect it, such as bedrooms or bathrooms,” said a spokesman for the Residential Tenancies Authority.
