Historic Minnesota town named “best downtown” in the state

These days, it seems like there’s a mall or large supermarket in virtually every mid-sized city in the U.S. However, Main Street shopping is making a major comeback.

There’s just something more special about shopping for a gift downtown than going to the local mega mall or shopping online. And a quaint town in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes has been named the best shopping street in the entire state.

The national trade magazine Cheapism has compiled a list of the best shopping opportunities along the main shopping streets for each US state. The choice of city for Minnesota should come as no surprise.

The Twin Cities suburb of Stillwater was listed as having the absolute best downtown shopping in the state.

One look at the town’s website will show you just how much it has to offer. There you’ll find over 50 independent, locally owned shops, antique stores, vintage furniture stores, home decor stores and even specialty food shops.

Visitors to Stillwater can see old-fashioned paddle steamers and gondolas cruising along the St. Croix River as they make their way from boutiques to restaurants. Although Stillwater is close to the Twin Cities, it feels secluded with its bed and breakfasts and historic inns.
