Kamala Harris gets on Donald Trump’s nerves in her first debate. Hurricane Francine is approaching Louisiana. And a new weight-loss pill is showing dramatic results.

This is what you should know today.

First presidential debate with Harris is marked by clashes, conspiracies and an unsettled Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump clashed in a heated debate over the economy, abortion and immigration. And while Trump tried to pair Harris with President Joe Biden, he learned that she is a much tougher rival.

As Trump attempted to recreate the conditions of the fateful June debate stage clash, Harris reminded him: “You’re not running against Joe Biden. You’re running against me.”

Harris immediately addressed the economy, promising tax breaks for families to ease middle-class concerns. She found her comfort zone criticizing Trump’s stance on abortion. Trump was most confident when pointing to issues on which Harris has changed her position over the years, such as whether to ban fracking. Both candidates sought to claim the mantle of change in a country full of voters who crave it.

Harris tried to get Trump riled upand lured him into a defensive stance that prevented him from attacking her weaknesses. In one of the most memorable moments, Trump addressed a debunked conspiracy theory about Haitian immigrants in Ohio who eat dogs and other pets.

And when Trump rebuked Harris’ attempt to interrupt, some allies complained that he had lost control at a crucial moment. “Wait a minute, I’m talking now,” Trump said, annoyed. “You don’t mind, do you? … Does this sound familiar?” (Watch the moment here.)

Three Republican sources told NBC News after the debate that Trump appeared “angry” at that moment.

After the debate, Trump approached reporters and announced that the evening had been a success. He did not want to commit to a second debate, which Harris’ campaign team had challenged him to do.

Inflation continues to slow, but many consumers are likely still feeling the impact of higher prices ahead of the Federal Reserve’s expected rate cut this month. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the consumer price index for August today, and economists are forecasting an annual increase of 2.6%, up from 2.9% in July. Despite the apparent relief, consumers are still grappling with the increase in prices since the Covid pandemic began, especially when it comes to housing costs.

While some economists are predicting an economic “soft landing” with subdued unemployment and inflation, others fear the Fed’s expected 0.25% interest rate cut. may not be enough to avert a harsher outcome.

That appears to be faster than other common weight-loss drugs. The daily pill is called amycretin and works similarly to semaglutide, the drug in Wegovy and Ozempic, by mimicking a hormone that helps reduce food intake and appetite. It also mimics a second hormone that may promote feelings of fullness.

The results are part of a Phase 1 clinical trial that tests the safety of a new drug. Further research is needed to find out how well the drug works.
