How did the Bal Harbour Access Shops pop-up come to Greenville?

In 2023, a similar Bal Harbour pop-up shop opened in the Six Forks area of Raleigh, North Carolina, showcasing high-end retail and a restaurant concept. In Florida, both Sarasota and South Walton received the luxury brand showcase, most recently from May 24 to July 19.

The development and asset management of this project is entrusted to Matthew Lazenby, current President and CEO of Whitman Family Development, LLC.

According to Mayor Knox White, Lazenby lived briefly in Ashville, North Carolina, and grew to love the nearby Greenville area. When opportunities for Bal Harbour opened up in North Carolina and the Southeast, Lazenby’s familiarity with Greenville and his connection to Simon (Haywood Mall) sparked the idea of opening an upscale pop-up shopping center.

What are Bal Harbor Access Shops?

Known as an upscale mix of retail stores, Bal Harbour Shops opened in 1965 in response to the rapid growth of malls in the Southeast. The brand was created to emulate the look and feel of South Florida and is an open-air shopping concept created by Stanley Whitman.

In 1971, Neiman Marcus became the first high-end retailer in Bal Harbour, and Saks Fifth Avenue joined five years later.

The City of Greenville is expected to announce the official opening date at a later date.
