Accordingly ColliderDave Franco had said that the idea for The rental came from his personal paranoia about the concept of home sharing. “We trust to stay in a stranger’s house just because there are a few positive reviews online. In reality, while we were filming, new articles appeared every week about homeowners installing cameras in their home. (…) We are all aware of the risks involved in staying in a stranger’s house, but we never think that something bad could actually happen to us,” he said.

Jeremy Allen White, who plays one of the most interesting roles in the film, said: “When I read it, I was rooting for Josh the whole time. I saw this guy who really wanted to be better. He’s dating a woman who I think is way above him. She’s beautiful and intelligent, and I think he has some self-esteem issues, probably because of his older brother. Then he goes on this journey with them, and I feel like he gets a little bit crushed in the process. I think I was kind of drawn to this tragic character who’s trying to be better. But of course, it doesn’t work out the way he wants it to.”
