Harford County student charged after threatening school shooting on social media

On Wednesday afternoon, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office posted a school safety alert on Facebook in response to a school shooting threat circulating on Snapchat.

“We will investigate all threats of violence against a school and, if possible, charge the students responsible for spreading fear!” said the statement posted on the Harford County Sheriff’s Facebook page.

At around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers began knocking on doors to follow up on a tip and immediately began their investigation.

As part of the investigation, officers visited the home of the person, a public high school student, suspected of making the claim.

According to the sheriff’s office, the evidence was clear: it was the teen who actually posted the threat.

The deputies accused the student of threatening to commit an act of violence.

Last week, Harford County officials investigated 11 cases of threats of violence against a school.

In the last 14 hours, MPs investigated three cases of violent threats against schools.

According to the sheriff, Maryland law does not allow the name of the student accused of this crime to be released to the public or the school. The sheriff’s office said it is doing its best to keep the public informed under child protection laws.
