Guilty plea leads to 45 years in prison for shooting at Little Saigon restaurant

Bich Xuan Dang, a repeat offender, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to involvement in a double murder in Houston’s Little Saigon neighborhood in 2022.

According to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Dang, 51, was one of three men who entered the Vietnamese restaurant Tai Loi on Bellaire Boulevard on October 5, 2022. He shot 63-year-old Hanh Nguyen and 51-year-old Long Nguyen, killing both. The shooting was captured on video surveillance and witnesses also identified Dang.

“This was a brutal shooting in a place that should be safe for families and all Houstonians,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said Thursday. “It is important to the community and the families of the victims that everyone involved is held accountable.”

The motive for the attack is still unknown. Before the shooting at the restaurant, the suspects attempted to extort $1,000 from Café Window, a nearby restaurant, according to a recording. When an armed security guard forced them to leave, the men drove straight to Tai Loi, where they carried out the fatal attack, according to CW 39.

Dang and another suspect, whose case is still pending, were arrested by Houston police shortly after the incident. According to FOX 26 Houston, the case was prosecuted by ADA Chris Condon, a chief of the state attorney’s homicide unit, and ADA George Lindsey, a director of the state attorney’s organized crime unit.

“We were ready to go to trial when this defendant decided to take responsibility and plead guilty,” Condon said. “There is surveillance video that shows exactly what happened and witnesses who were willing to testify to get justice for the victims and their families.”

After pleading guilty, Dang will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least half of his 45-year sentence. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
