Groundbreaking ceremony for major I-94 construction project from Albertville to Monticello

Minnesota lawmakers and politicians announce groundbreaking for new I-94 project. (FOX 9)

Numerous politicians from the state of Minnesota, including Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan and Senator Amy Klobuchar, opened construction work for the “I-94 Gap Project” with a ceremonial groundbreaking on Friday.

The project is designed to close the gap between Albertville and Monticello and widen Interstate 94 to ease traffic for northbound travelers.

What is expected from the project?

I-94 will be widened to six lanes, three in each direction, between Monitcello and Albertville.

Additionally, a third lane will be added from County Road 37 in Albertville to west of Highway 25 in Monticello. A third eastbound lane will be added from west of Highway 25 to County Road 19 in Monticello.

The westbound bridge over Wright County Road 19 in Albertville will be replaced and the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello will be widened.

Additionally, underground pipes will be replaced or repaired and noise barriers will be built along I-94 in Monticello.

When does construction work start and end?

From July 22 through late fall 2024, I-94 between Wright County Road 37 in Albertville and Highway 25 in Monticello will experience intermittent one-lane closures in both directions, mostly at night between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The main construction work is expected to begin in spring 2025 and be completed in autumn 2026.
